A good hair transplants is determined by the experience of the hair surgeon, the grafting technique used, the quality of the patient's grafts, and the successful transfer of follicles from the collection point to the graft area. However, the weeks following hair transplant treatment are critical for healthy hair growth, so recovery is equally important. If proper care is taken of the new grafts, the chances of hair transplant failure are reduced, regardless of the transplant technique chosen. New grafts are delicate and need the utmost care to develop properly.
In order to get the best results from this procedure, it is essential that you follow all postoperative instructions provided by our clinic and that you remain optimistic about your results. In this blog, we will provide the right recommendations that every patient should follow that you should follow every day whether it is for a male or female hair transplant, a beard transplant, a micro hair transplant on a small area, or a frizzy hair transplant.
Hair Wash After Hair Transplant
Every patient at the clinic receives instruction on how to properly wash their hair because it's one of the most significant factors that might affect how well their hair transplant procedure turns out. There are three primary phases in the hair wash process:
- After applying a lotion, oil or any other appropriate moisturizer, the transplanted region is kept in this condition for 15 to 30 minutes. The scratches surrounding the donor area and the transplanted grafts thus become softer. By removing traces of dried blood, this softening phase accelerates the healing process. After 15-30 minutes, warm water should be used to clean the scalp. A specific medical shampoo is applied to clean the donor and transplanted areas. To do this, very gently apply a small amount of shampoo to the entire scalp, lathering it between your hands. Rubbing should never be done. Each step of washing should be done gently, without applying any pressure, using only the palms of the hands.
- Use a paper towel to dry hair after shampooing. Give it a light rub instead of scrubbing. Use moisturizer until your scalp feels dry or until the scabs come off. If you feel like your hair is always dry, you can also use moisturizer between washes.
- To get rid of scabs, shampooing should be done daily. After 7-10 days, there should be no more signs of dried blood or wounds on the scalp. Within 14 days after transplantation, the normal hair-cleaning routine can be resumed. After the procedure, the patient may wash the hair more than once a day if necessary. As long as the bottle is not empty, continue to use the shampoo recommended by the clinic. If the patient buys his or her own hair products, he or she should ensure that they do not contain silicone, perfume, or colors.
Pain After A Hair Transplant
In the first few days after hair transplantation, pain may be mild. Some patients reported difficulty falling asleep in the early postoperative days. After surgery, it is typical to experience more discomfort at the donor site than at the recipient site. Over-the-counter pain relievers are also helpful in relieving discomfort and pain. Your doctor will provide them for you.
Swelling After The Hair Transplant
Larger hair transplant procedures and transplants involving extensive work on the hairline are more prone to swelling after the hair transplant procedure. The forehead and region around the eyes may experience some swelling, which may last from two to five days and peak on the fourth day.
Itching Following Hair Transplant
After a hair transplant, itching is a very common symptom in the first 7 to 14 days and can be present throughout the scalp area. In most cases, itching is a sign that the tissue is healing. When the itching becomes excessive, an antihistamine medication can be taken.
Correct Sleeping Position
During the first week after surgery, it is essential to avoid touching the recipient regions as much as possible. Patients are asked to sleep on their backs with a pair of pillows elevated above their heads. The pillows help reduce post-hair transplant edema by elevating the head during sleep. It is also recommended that patients use the customized pillow provided by the clinic for the first seven to 10 days.
Healing And Recovery After The Hair Transplant
Healing and recovery occur rapidly after any hair transplant surgery. Most patients recover fully in one to two days after surgery, while some numbness and mild scalp discomfort may last for a few days. For about seven to ten days, dotted red scabs will be present at the base of the transplanted hair shafts at the recipient and donor sites.
After surgery, the patient usually returns to a normal appearance after 10-15 days. After this period, only mild redness and swelling will be evident. Individuals with very fair complexions may be flushed for prolonged periods after treatment, while patients with darker skin and hair heal more quickly. All in all, the recovery process after a hair transplant is very personalized and influenced by several factors such as age, lifestyle, diet, and even the patient's environment.
Shaving After Hair Transplantation
One month after transplantation, the recipient region can be shaved. If the scabs at the donor site have fallen off, the donor regions can be shaved as early as one week after surgery.
Shock Loss And Regrowth Of Transplanted Hair
Shock loss often occurs in the first three to four weeks after hair transplantation. Lost grafts begin to regenerate gradually during the third or fifth month. The regrowth rate should be about 30% at the end of the fifth month and about 60% at the end of the seventh month. The final results of the surgery should be evaluated 12 months after the procedure.
Physical Activity
You can start taking short walks or other low-impact physical activities as soon as you receive your hair transplant. Ten days after surgery, you can start doing physical activity as before. To reduce the risk of infection, showering immediately after exercise is recommended.
Scalp Micro-Pigmentation (SMP) And Hair Restoration
After surgery, it is necessary to wait three months before performing any form of scalp treatment. The hair transplant procedure is not affected if SMP therapy, also known as scalp micropigmentation, has been performed prior to surgery.
Alcohol Consumption
Alcohol consumption prolongs wound healing time after hair transplantation. It is best to abstain up to two weeks after surgery.
Sun Exposure
It is essential to avoid direct sunlight for the first two weeks after surgery. When exposing yourself to sunlight for the first six months after the transplant, it is recommended that you wear something to cover your head.
Medication And Hair Product Recommendations
Shampoo And Lotion For Hair Wash
Application of the lotion to the donor and recipient regions should be done by patting gently. The moisturizer should be left on for fifteen to thirty minutes before being washed off with shampoo and warm water.Be very careful when handling the towel and try not to scratch the recipient's skin. It is necessary to wash the hair every day until all the scabs come off easily without applying pressure. Some lotion can be used to soothe the donor region if it feels dry between washes. In this case, it is not necessary to wash it.
Scarex or Contractubex creams
Contractubex or Scarex can be used to reduce scars in the donor area, and you should know that this is the only area that can be treated with this product. It should be applied twice a day and should be used 14 days after surgery.
Antibiotics Use After Hair Transplantation
Immediately after surgery, the patient will be prescribed antibiotics for three to five days. They are used to ensure a rapid healing process and to prevent any infection. Antibiotic creams such as Bacitracin or Fucidin may also be needed at some point in the healing process. This cream should be used directly on the inflamed regions if bumps or pimples form on the donor or recipient sites.
Finasteride
In some cases, Finasteride will be recommended if required. This medicine is used to prevent further hair loss, to strengthen weak hair and to reduce stroke loss after surgery. Patients may experience a reduction in sexual desire, but this uncommon adverse effect passes after discontinuing the drug.
Minoxidil (5% or 2%)
Minoxidil will be prescribed for both male and female patients but with different percentages. 5% for male clients and 2% for female clients. This medication is used to reduce the loss of natural hair and fasten the grafts' regeneration after transplantation. When the donor and recipient regions have fully healed from the transplant procedure, minoxidil can be taken one month later.
Biotin As A Food Supplement
It's common advice to take biotin supplements to strengthen hair and nails. This natural supplement must be used following transplantation for a minimum of six months. Biotin can be easily bought at any drugstore without the need for a prescription.
Dermaroller
In some cases, a derma roller device is recommended. This device is used to improve blood circulation and massage the scalp. It should be used only 45 days after surgery, two or three times a week.
